Advantages of the electric actuator – Top 5 benefits

The greatest advantages of the electric actuator – Top 5 benefits

Each of you who has had contact with mechanics, automatics or electrics probably knows the division of drives for controlling linear motion. However, if someone did not have or simply forgot, then we remind you that there are pneumatic, hydraulic, electric, mechanical or electro-hydraulic actuators. Although hydraulic and pneumatic  are the most popular types of linear actuators, electric linear actuators are not far behind, all thanks to the advantages that will be discussed today.

Below are the top 5 benefits of using an electric linear actuator. Perhaps this explains why most engineers are more oriented towards this type of technology.

1. Simplicity of maintenance of the actuator

Electric actuators have become almost maintenance-free. They are much less complex than their pneumatic and hydraulic counterparts. They usually consist of a motor, gear and bolt, which makes them easier to maintain. Sometimes they only require a little grease. In hydraulic systems, fluid must be checked and possibly added or changed regularly to ensure proper operation. Moreover, multiple sections (e.g. axles) can be controlled by one hydraulic system. As a result, a seemingly minor problem can potentially stop many system activities. Electric actuators are easier to troubleshoot. This is the case, if only because of their autonomy and lack of close connection with the entire control system.

2. Low price

Low maintenance costs translate into lower operating costs. There are two main factors to consider when it comes to price: purchase and operation. Usually in technology they are inversely proportional. This means that if something is cheaper to buy, it usually turns out to be more expensive to run later and vice versa. However, for electric actuators, both of these costs are low compared to hydraulic or pneumatic alternatives.

The general rule is that the hydraulic system works on one, two or three axles. Can be replaced with an electromechanical equivalent for less money. The second factor is that compared to hydraulic systems, linear motion based on electric actuators is less expensive to operate. This is mainly due to the fact that they only perform the work when they are on the move. Pneumatic systems require air movement even when not in operation. This solution is, in fact, a waste of energy. Hence, it is estimated that an electric actuator can offer savings of up to 90 percent.

The belief that electric actuators can cost more than competing technologies is definitely wrong. This is not true, as they often work longer and generate savings that pay off over the life of the product. The investment in electric actuators turns out to be more economical.

3. Security

Hydraulic and pneumatic actuators are prone to leaks and cracks, while electromechanical systems are not. This is certainly a big advantage. It deals with health and safety, not to mention the potential cost, of repairing common failures associated with these technologies. Electric actuators do not have these problems.

4. Ecology

Unlike pneumatics and hydraulics, electric linear actuators operate with electricity, i.e. clean transmission technology. Due to this, there is a slight risk of product contamination. It is used in many industries such as pharmaceuticals, food, water and medical.

The increased efficiency and clean benefits of the technology contribute to reducing the negative impact on the environment.

Electric motors are also much quieter than hydraulic and pneumatic ones. They provide a safer and more enjoyable working environment.

In fact, health and safety guidelines state that machines should be operated at a maximum of 85 decibels from a distance of 1 m. This technology certainly meets this requirement.

5. Less complicated structure and easy assembly

This last benefit is perhaps the most important. Electric linear actuators have a simple design. This makes them easier to integrate into a variety of applications. This technology easily harmonizes with other systems and devices.
